Voice overs

I'm really mostly curious. Has anyone here had any success with cleaning up audio from shows to use as voice overs in their vids?

I often find even relatively "clean" bits of audio have tinkly noises or soft piano or some such in the background and they can really stand out depending on where you're using the voice over in your vid.

I have Audacity and Sony Vegas 7 available to me and a few other bibs and bobs of freeware besides.

Any tips would be welcome.
