Looking to Buy a Video Editing Program

Hello! I am currently looking into purchasing a video editing program, but with so many choices out there I'm not sure which one is right for me. I tried to do a little Google search and came up with mixed reviews on a few items, so I just wanted to ask someone what their opinion is. I have tried to use the free video editing programs out there (Avidemux and the ever-so-popular VirtualDub) but there is always something with wrong with my video type or it just doesn't turn out right when I edit it. I'm looking for a program that is lightweight on my computer and I will not have to buy extensions or keep updating the product by buying a new one every year. I also want it to be easy to use, since while I know what I'm basically doing, I'm no expert. The main thing that I am looking to use this program for is for cutting out video from longer segments, burning DVD's, and maybe splicing video together. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
